Norwich State Hospital in Preston, Connecticut.
(photo via opacity)Norwich State Hospital was a hospital treating psychatric and criminal patients. It opened in October 1905. The population of the hospital peaked in the mid-1950s, when it had almost 3,000 patients. There are over thirty buildings on the property in various states of disrepair. Many of the main buildings are connected with tunnels. Some of these tunnels have since been filled in, but many still exist.
Norwich State Hospital closed entirely in 1996. The extensive tunnel network, full of cancer causing asbestos, along with the rotting underground tanks and old hospital landfills create very expensive cleanup costs. This, along with various state and town legislative issues, have left the property in limbo since its closure.
The location has been reported by staff and other witnesses to be haunted. Syfy Channel’s Ghost Hunters paranormal investigating team explored the location in their sixth season finale which aired May 5, 2010.
Really freaky, because my brother, mum, bestfriend, nextdoor neighbor and I all actually have been inside of the old Norwich State Hospital. We explored through the tunnels and some of the buildings for over two hours one night. It’s the scariest place I’ve encountered so far. Most of the beds and items like wheel chairs and chairs and so much more were just left behind, It’s very strange. When inside we found a sort of arts and crafts room, and as soon as we entered until the final room where we exited through one of the buildings we felt as though we were being followed by something, and sitting in one room all of us felt as though the room wasn’t empty, but it was filled with hundreds of people. It was a great and horrifying experience.
